Add a free-speech Chinese Internet Cop to your site

Freedom of speech is a topic close to my heart, especially when it concerns the Internet.

The latest attack on free speech comes from China, where virtual police officers are being used to remind the Chinese people that they should be careful not to visit unapproved sites.

Beijing police pop up to warn internet users

Cartoon police officers are to appear in "pop-up" warnings on the internet every half hour to warn Chinese users that they must steer clear of unapproved websites.

As the country prepares for its landmark five-yearly Communist Party Congress in October, human rights groups said the authorities are exerting even greater pressure on freedom of speech.

Reading this article reminded me of just how lucky I am to live in a country where the Internet is still without censorship (well, for now at least).

To spread awareness about the current state of the Internet in China, and to remind my readers of the freedoms we sometimes take for granted, I created my own free-speech version of the Chinese Internet Cop.

You can include him in your site by copying-and-pasting the text below into the HTML of your website:

Super Mario Papercraft: World 7-3

This model was delayed a little from the pain of having my wisdom teeth removed, and also because I've been busy preparing to leave for Malaysia.

However I did manage to put some time aside to work on World 7-3 for Super Mario Papercraft.

I recieved some feedback which suggested my models weren't lively enough (compared to the Sonic papercraft), even though SMB1 was a significantly simpler game than Sonic. My original focus was on accurately recreating a scene from the level to scale rather than model complexity.

But if you guys talk, I listen. So I bent the rules of accuracy a tiny bit to make this slightly more detailed model. More enemies, more landmark features, and more of a 3-D feel.

Enjoy! I'll be back in a month.

Super Mario Papercraft Diorama: World 1-1

I've always been impressed with the Sonic the Hedgehog Papercraft available at Japan's Sega website, but since I'm a Mario fan-boy, I was also disappointed that I could never find a Mario equivalent. I mean, there are some Mario papercraft figures, but not a level diorama like the Sonic one.

Until now.

I had some free time on the weekend and have whipped up this papercraft diorama model of World 1-1 from Super Mario Brothers. It's more-or-less to scale, too.

If you like it, stay tuned because there are more on the way.

Enjoy!
